Phonics and Reading Schemes
We are currently implementing a new phonics scheme:
Read Write Inc
Read Write Inc. Phonics teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.

How we teach readingReading at Brightlingsea Primary School
Reading VIPERS, which is the mnemonic we use, is our way of teaching and assessing the skills that we focus on in reading. The 6 domains focus on the comprehension aspect of reading and not the mechanics: decoding and fluency. These are taught additionally. All children will be working on VIPERS during class reading, whether it is reading as a class, in a small group, or one-to-one with an adult. As such, VIPERS is not a reading scheme but rather a method of ensuring that adults ask, and children are familiar with, a range of questions. They allow the adult to track the type of questions asked and the children’s responses to these which allows for targeted questioning.
V= vocabulary
I= infer
P=predict
E=explain
R=retrieve
S= sequence (KS1)
S= summarise (KS2)
All reading domains are covered by these 6 skills.
