P.S.H.E.
SummaryOur intention is that when children leave Brightlingsea Primary School, they will do so with the knowledge, understating and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We will deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximize the outcomes for every child. At Brightlingsea Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a diverse society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. Our Relationship and Sex Education enables children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy, respectful relationships both now and in their future lives.IntentionTo deliver a PSHE curriculum which develops learning and the acquisition of knowledge and skills to enable children to access the wider curriculum and to prepare them to be global citizens. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences that they may encounter in life.ImplementationPupils are taught PSHE using ‘Jigsaw’ which is an iterative, progressive scheme of work. There is a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. It includes mindfulness to allow children to develop and refine their emotional awareness, concentration and focus. The Sex Education aspects of PSHE are also taught through Jigsaw. In addition to Relationships Education, we teach aspects of Sex Education through our Science curriculum.Jigsaw is based around 6 puzzle pieces taught in each year group in a progressive sequence.Autumn 1 - Being Me In My WorldAutumn 2 - Celebrating DifferenceSpring 1 - Dreams And GoalsSpring 2 - Healthy MeSummer 1 - RelationshipsSummer 2 - Changing MeJigsaw also develops and deepens pupils understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. It also identifies links to protected characteristics and spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC).Wider CurriculumPSHE, including SMSC and British Values, is an integral part of the whole school curriculum, and is therefore often taught within other subject areas. This can be identified in each year group’s long term and medium term planning. We encourage our pupils to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life through involvement in school council, eco council, librarians.Whole school, Key Stage and class assemblies always make a link to PSHE, British Values, Protected Characteristics and SMSC.ImpactWe believe that a well designed and taught PSHE curriculum is key to children becoming confident, tolerant, and well rounded human beings. By the time they leave Brightlingsea Primary school our pupils will:Be able to navigate a range of real life situations and apply their skills and knowledgeBe on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible active members of society.Appreciate difference and diversityRecognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and individual liberty.Be able to look after their own mental and physical health and well beingBe able to develop positive, healthy relationships with peersUnderstand the physical aspects of RSE at an age appropriate levelHave respect for themselves and othersHave positive self esteemAt Brightlingsea we believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and as well as discrete focused lessons, it is also embedded throughout the curriculum. PSHE is integral to the development of children’s values in order for them to become a positive citizen in a forever changing community. PSHE is an important part of school assemblies were children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.
