Geography

Intention

At Brightlingsea Primary School we believe that geography education should encourage children to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Geography; providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum. We intend to equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying places, people and natural and human environments. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area of Brightlingsea, so that they can develop a real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special.

 Implementation

We recognise that not all children learn best in the same way, so our geography curriculum allows children to learn in different ways by visiting the local area, inviting visitors into our school, going on school trips and looking at maps, atlases and artefacts. We know that these experiences will make the curriculum far more fun and engaging for our children.

We make deliberate choices about how we deliver the geography curriculum, to ensure we promote equal opportunities and continue to challenge stereotypes by exploring developed and undeveloped countries.  For example, in Year 2 the children compare Kenya and London. During their comparisons they explore both developed and undeveloped areas to address any stereotypes associated with particular places. This will allow children to gain a better understanding of the world we live in.

 Impact

The impact of our geography curriculum will be measured in a variety of ways including lesson observations, pupil progress, pupil voice and by looking at children’s work. Our curriculum not only meets the needs of the National Curriculum, but it also provides our children with a broad vocabulary of geographical terms and the skills to help children explore, navigate and understand the world around them. Children will be prepared for the Key Stage 3 curriculum and for life as an adult in the wider world.
